VIETNAM HUMANITOUR
In 2004 we began the first in our series of Humanitours trips, with a wonderful journey to Vietnam and Cambodia. During our adventure in Vietnam we visited many NGOs (non-government organizations) to meet and talk with those who are working to ease the hardships of rural Vietnamese people. For our first humanitarian project we gave a water buffalo to a local farming family so they would be better able to increase the yields in their rice fields. In the Mekong Delta, for our second project, we had a special sampan (boat) built and then presented it to a young married couple so they could transport their produce to market on the waterways. These small acts allowed us an opportunity to give something back to the people we were visiting, and interacting with the Vietnamese families who were the recipients of our donations was a very special part of our adventure.
Outside Hue we also visited the Duc Son Pagoda Orphanage, run by Buddhist nuns and founded by the venerable head nun, Thich Nu Minh Tu. We heard her story of how she started the orphanage more than two decades ago. We met many of the 200 children who so happily live there: children of poverty, of war and landmine victims, and children who have been abandoned. Since our visit, AdventureWomen has made corporate donations to the orphanage. In addition, some participants from that trip also continue to donate to and support this wonderful orphanage and the legacy of all the children who live, and have lived there. Minh Tu has written to AdventureWomen that “This sum of money is not only a material help but also a spiritual support for us to continue our voluntary work and improve it.”
